Ghwigelis/Wyclese
The very old village of Ghwigelis, “whale becoming stone”, is located at Quascilla Bay half way up Smith Inlet. In ancient times all the tribes of the Gwa’sala came together here to build a large winter village on a detached rock, connected to the mainland by a platform or causeway.
When members of Captain Vancouver’s exploration expedition visited the village in 1792 there were 250 Gwa’sala living at Ghwigelis . Wyclese IR#1 was the first reserve allotted to the Gwa’sala along with an exclusive salmon fishery, a fishing treaty that was never honoured.
