Neghitl/Nekite
Neghitl or Nekite is the origin place of one of the four Gwa’sala clans. There was a bighouse there in 1882 when 170 acres were allotted as the Nekite Reserve.
Coho, chum and humps go up the Nekite River and the area is also rich in red snapper, lingcod and crab. Salmonberries grow in abundance all along the Nekite reserve. The Gwa’sala trapped marten and other species along the river and on the islands at the head of Smith Inlet. Eagle, grizzly and black bear can be seen along the banks and flat lands of the Nekite River. Neghitl was a traditional base for Gwa’sala timber supply and numerous culturally modified trees are found in the area. Commercial logging enterprises have since exploited the area leaving clear cuts, logging debris and a network of logging roads. In the mid 20th century logging camps employed up to 100 people at Neghitl. |
