Tseh'la/Long Lake
Long Lake, Tseh'la, extends from Duxhsi to Smokehouse Creek, a distance of nearly 22 kilometres. Sockeye spawned in Long Lake in June and July and at the end of the fishing season, the Gwa’sala travelled up the Lake to the village of Halowis, where whole communities lived in smokehouses until early December, smoking sockeye and hunting and trapping around the Lake and up Smokehouse Creek. The traplines at Long Lake and Smokehouse Creek belonged to everyone.
The river system is rich in cultural and spiritual sites. Numerous well-preserved red-ochre pictographs can be found along the shore of Long Lake and the mountains, caves and streams at Smokehouse Creek are populated by characters from the myth world. |
